The people of St. Mark's continue their generous support of Metropolitan Ministries. Since this is an ongoing need, a barrel (blue) is provided in the Narthex where contributions may be placed to be taken to the Florida Street complex. For Thanksgiving and Christmas, 32 food boxes, 27 turkeys, 18 new toys, several new children's outfits, and many checks were delivered to the Holiday Tent. The focus of Metropolitan Ministries program has changed this year; the tremendous provision of meals at the Florida Street location has now been allocated to various locations throughout the city, and a more concentrated program is provided there for some one hundred-plus families who have committed themselves to an intense program of rehabilitation and education in a long-range effort to turn their lives around. Overall, the number of persons served will be greater than before, so support is more sorely needed than ever. We continue to collect food staples and diapers and baby foods to fill our Barrel in the Narthex. The need never stops! Out of the barrel, we have been taking a few items that can be used by the Social workers at the Dept. of Children & Families. The need for these items comes about because the people often come in late in the afternoon and especially late on a Friday afternoon. They would normally be sent to Metropolitan Ministries, but these ‘late’ comers haven’t the time to get there before closing time. So the workers have been trying to supply a very small cupboard with the few items that are often needed to get these families through the night or the weekend. The DCF cupboard needs always help. Some items in constant demand include: Canned meats, chicken, span, tuna, beef, hash, Vienna sausages, stew, spaghetti with meatballs, and ravioli. Also, soups, rice, pasta, canned baby formula, baby cereal, and diapers, and bottles of water and small juice boxes and snack cracker packs like cheese crackers with peanut butter. Your support of this program is vital and certainly appreciated! (Fran Baylies / Annetta Wiley)
